Roy Keane hits back at Bruno Fernandes over ‘lies’ accusation

Roy Keane has made a thinly veiled dig at Bruno Fernandes after the Man Utd captain accused the TV pundit of lying about him.

Fernandes made Premier League history on Sunday when he made his 21st assist of the season, breaking the record for most assists in a single campaign.

The playmaker set up Patrick Dorgu for the Red Devils’ opening goal at Old Trafford, before later scoring himself in a 3-0 win over Brighton.

Keane, though, took issue with how Fernandes went about chasing the record, arguing that he “won’t be winning trophies” with his mindset.

The Man Utd legend thought that Fernandes had admitted he should have shot instead of passing in certain moments against Nottingham Forest, but the 31-year-old has called him for lying about his comments.

“Like I’ve always said, I don’t mind criticism,” Fernandes told The Diary of a CEO podcast. “I’ve always taken criticism from everyone and anyone and I never reply to anything whatsoever. People have an opinion; they think it’s good, bad, whatever.

“What I don’t like is when people lie about things and this case that you said about Roy Keane basically, what he said is a lie because either he saw some other interview or he can’t say that I said one thing that I’ve just not said and luckily for me, everything is on record.

“I accept his criticism, I accept that he might like me as a player or not, like me as a person or not. But what I don’t like is that he puts words in my mouth that have not been said. That’s the only thing I don’t like.”

Following the interview, Keane took to Instagram to give his reaction. The Irishman responded by posting what appears to be an AI-generated image of a donkey with the words: ‘Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion’.

What did Roy Keane say about Bruno Fernandes?

The row began when Keane commented on Fernandes’ approach against Forest on last week’s episode of The Overlap podcast.

“After the game he got interviewed and he said, the captain of Manchester United said: ‘A few times, I probably should have shot but I made them passes,’” he said.

“Wow. How can your mindset of a footballer be going into a match to be about an individual record?

“He won’t be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team.”

@wearetheoverlap “It’s a circus act!” 😡 Roy had plenty to say about Bruno Fernandes’ assist record on the latest episode of Stick to Football… and, as always, he didn’t hold back. 🗣 #bruno #brunofernades #roykeane #manchesterunited #theoverlap ♬ original sound – The Overlap
