Roma view Spurs striker as potential Zirkzee alternative

Roma will consider a loan move to sign Mathys Tel from Tottenham in January, if the club are unable to land Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee has been heavily linked with a return to Serie A in the winter window, having fallen out of favour this season.

The Dutch international has played just 82 minutes of Premier League football following the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Roma want to lure the ex-Bologna forward back to Italy, while Zirkzee is keen to secure more minutes and boost his hopes of making the Netherlands’ World Cup squad.

However, Roma are making contingency plans should a deal fall through. Tel is a name on the club’s radar, as the Frenchman battles for favour at Tottenham.

The 20-year-old has scored twice in the Premier League this season but has started just three league games. Spurs signed Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and also have Dominic Solanke and Richarlison as centre-forward options.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma view Tel as an attainable option and a loan deal could benefit all parties.

Roma want to strengthen their forward line in January as the capital club chase Serie A title success. Artem Dovbyk has been linked with an exit, while Evan Ferguson, on loan from Brighton, is yet to open his account after 10 appearances.
