Arne Slot’s side were emphatically beaten at the Etihad, as goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku secured the points.
For Liverpool, it was a stark reality check following recent wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid. The defeat leaves Liverpool eighth in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal, heading into November’s international break.
Liverpool have now lost five of their opening 11 games of the Premier League season, having lost just four games in total during their 2024/25 title-winning season.
Their record of five defeats in their opening 11 games is the worst start of any Premier League champion since Leicester City in 2016/17, who ended the campaign 12th in the table.
Only Chelsea in 2015/16 (6) have ever lost more of their opening 11 games as defending champions.
