Le Bris Hails 'Leader' Xhaka as Key to Sunderland's Rise

Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has praised captain Granit Xhaka’s crucial leadership role.

This comes ahead of Monday’s Premier League encounter with Everton. Le Bris described the Swiss midfielder as instrumental in managing the team’s performance from the pitch.

Speaking at his press conference, Le Bris emphasised the importance of players taking ownership during matches. He specifically credited Xhaka for leading this effort at the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris explained that to be competitive at this level, players must “own the performance on the pitch.” The French coach highlighted how Xhaka manages different elements during a match. He noted that while the 32-year-old is not alone in this responsibility, “he leads by example.”

Furthermore, Le Bris revealed that Xhaka’s influence extends beyond just tactical adjustments. He also provides vital belief and motivation.

For instance, the manager said that before the win at Chelsea, Xhaka’s belief was clear. He showed and told the squad “in the dressing room, everywhere” that they could win. This, Le Bris noted, makes other players want to follow his lead.

Empowering Players Over Sideline Control

The Sunderland boss also explained his coaching philosophy. It centres on distributing responsibility rather than maintaining constant sideline control. “As a coach, you don’t want to be the main man,” Le Bris stated. “For me, it’s not my purpose.”

Instead, he wants to give “knowledge, power, (and) responsibility to the squad.” He added that players must manage the game in real-time, which coaches cannot do from the touchline.

Le Bris confirmed that other players besides Xhaka are also capable of managing these “micro situations.” This collective ability is helping the newly-promoted side improve their competitive level.

Xhaka joined Sunderland in July. He has already recorded three assists and created four big chances in nine league appearances. This has helped Sunderland rise to sixth in the table ahead of Monday’s match with Everton.
