Former Arsenal defender backs defence to win club the title

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell backs defence to win club the Premier League title.

Sol Campbell believes Arsenal’s defensive unit can win the club trophies and said the Gunners ‘just have to win’ this season.

Arsenal sit top of the Premier League table ahead of the Premier League’s return next weekend, a point clear of champions Liverpool. The North Londoners are aiming to end a 22-year wait for the league title this season, after three consecutive campaigns as runners-up.

Campbell believes the strength of Arsenal’s defence can ensure their successful this season. Mikel Arteta’s side have kept four clean sheets in seven games and have conceded just once from open play in the Premier League.

“[William] Saliba wouldn’t have signed the contract [until 2030] as well if he didn’t believe Arsenal can win. They just have to win. This year they’ve got to win by hook or by crook — but you have work to get a lucky break,” Campbell told The Times.

“I think Jurrien Timber is probably one of the best right backs in Europe at the moment. He’s incredible, can score goals, good in one-on-one scenarios. He’s definitely lost a little bit of time from his injury but he’s a top, top player.

“I think it comes down to the back five. They know what they’re doing now. They’re young, but it’s the maturity of their play now. The belief is there. They know they can do it.”
