Como and Inter strike pact in race for Chelsea’s Chalobah

Como and Inter strike pact in race for Chelsea's Chalobah

The pursuit of Trevoh Chalobah has taken an unusual turn, with the two Italian clubs chasing him agreeing to avoid a bidding war.

Como president Mirwan Suwarso has spoken directly to Inter counterpart Giuseppe Marotta about the Chelsea defender, Fabrizio Romano reports, in a call that produced a notable understanding.

The conversation had a dual purpose. It was designed partly to dispel talk of strained relations between the clubs, who have clashed over targets before.

Crucially, though, it also allowed Como to send Inter a clear message over the Chalobah affair.

Como’s stance is now defined. They have told Inter they will not be drawn into an auction for the 26-year-old.

The Lariani will only bid again for Chalobah if Inter walk away from the race entirely. Inter, for their part, remain firmly in control.

🚨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Como president Suwarso reached out to Inter president Marotta today about Trevoh Chalobah deal.

Good relationship + Como informed they will only bid again for Chalobah IF Inter leave the race; while Inter remain in talks with player’s camp.

The Serie A champions are still in talks with the player’s camp over personal terms, and hold an agreement in principle on the shape of a contract.

That leaves them as clear favourites for his signature. The player’s own preference has shaped the picture.

Chalobah has decided he wants to continue his career in Italy, having spent his entire career at Chelsea since joining the academy aged eight.

Inter’s system, built around a back three, suits him well. A stumbling block remains, however. Chelsea value Chalobah at around £35m, and no formal offer has yet arrived from Inter.

Como’s earlier bid of around £23m was rejected, prompting them to hold firm rather than improve it. Chelsea are content to sell regardless.

As an academy graduate, any fee counts as pure profit under financial rules, and Chalobah is not viewed as central to Xabi Alonso’s plans.

He is currently with England at the World Cup, where his club future will be resolved once the tournament ends.
