Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, hijacking Arsenal’s long pursuit of the England midfielder.
The 23-year-old will put pen to paper on a six-year contract, with the option of a further year. David Ornstein reports that Villa accepted the bid, with the transfer now being finalised.
The fee sets a new British record. It eclipses the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, another England midfielder.
Rogers also becomes Chelsea’s most expensive signing, surpassing the £115m spent on Moises Caicedo in 2023.
Arsenal had appeared to be leading the race. The Gunners made Rogers their priority attacking target and held talks with player and club, only for Chelsea to intervene late and decisively.

Xabi Alonso proved the difference. The new Chelsea head coach personally convinced Rogers that his future lay at Stamford Bridge, winning a battle that Arsenal had long expected to conclude in their favour.
Rogers will complete a medical on Monday, once his World Cup commitments conclude. He is still with England in the United States, and is in line to feature in tonight’s third-place play-off against France.
His versatility suits Alonso’s plans well. Rogers can operate as an attacking midfielder or a winger, offering flexibility across the forward line. He was voted PFA Young Player of the Season last term.

His rise has been rapid. A former Manchester City academy player, Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough for a modest fee in February 2024.
He scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances and helped Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League.
The sale is a significant blow for Villa. They had valued Rogers heavily and tied him to a deal until 2031, but the British-record fee proved impossible to turn down as they navigate financial rules.
