Arsenal great Aaron Ramsey ready for Oxford challenge

Aaron Ramsey insists he is ready to lead Oxford United, as the former Arsenal and Wales midfielder steps into his first permanent managerial role.

The 35-year-old was appointed this week to oversee the League One club’s bid to bounce straight back.

His coaching experience is slim. Ramsey only retired from playing in April, and his sole prior dugout role was a three-game interim spell at Cardiff in 2024-25. He is unfazed by the doubters, however.

“I wouldn’t be sat in this position if I didn’t think I was ready,” he told BBC Radio Oxford. “I’ve been planning for this now for the last few years.

As soon as I started these conversations with the club, and I realised how ambitious they were, I knew this was the right place for me.”

He inherits a side in transition. Ramsey replaces Matt Bloomfield, sacked after Oxford were relegated from the Championship, finishing 22nd and four points from safety.

The club have also lost top scorer Will Lankshear. The new boss was careful not to set promotion as an explicit target.

“For me, success looks like instilling everyday behaviours and habits into my team and giving us a platform, from which I’m confident success will follow,” he said.

He spoke of a clear identity built on “elite habits and behaviours.” Those standards were absorbed across a 19-year playing career.

Ramsey made more than 500 appearances, the bulk under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, and also played for Unai Emery, Andrea Pirlo and Maurizio Sarri.

His mentors point to a bright future. Wales boss Craig Bellamy tipped him to manage “at a high level,” while Ramsey has cited Mikel Arteta as a role model. He declined, though, to name who he would draw on now.

“I really want the fans to be excited and proud every time they come and watch their team,” Ramsey added. “There’s a lot of potential in this team, a really talented group.”
