The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed a viral wanted poster featuring popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, calling it fake and misleading.
The commission made this clarification on Thursday through a post on its official social media page, stamping the circulating poster “FAKE NEWS” and warning those responsible to stop spreading false information.
“Clout chaser, Stop this now!” the EFCC wrote in the caption accompanying the post.
The doctored poster, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, bore the EFCC logo and falsely claimed that Sabinus, 43, was wanted for obtaining money by false pretence.
It also included a purported last known address as 13/14 Ligali Ayomide Street, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
Investigations revealed that the poster mimicked the design and format typically used by the anti-graft agency in announcing wanted suspects.
The EFCC did not indicate whether it had identified or was tracking the individual or group behind the fake material.
Sabinus, renowned for his skits and online comedy content, has garnered a large following both in Nigeria and internationally.
He has not publicly commented on the matter as of the time of filing this report.
