How 2Baba lit up Lagos at 25th anniversary concert

By Benjamin Njoku

Nigerian music legend, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, delivered a memorable performance last weekend, in Lagos, during a grand concert marking his 25th anniversary in the music industry.

The landmark event, tagged “The 2Baba Experience,” drew fans, industry stakeholders, and top entertainers from across the country, who gathered to celebrate 2Baba’s enduring legacy as a pioneer of modern Afrobeats.

2Baba’s contribution to the evolution and global recognition of the genre remains significant. From his early days with Plantashun Boiz to his successful solo career, his artistry, consistency, and investment in the music industry have helped shape what is now known globally as Afrobeats.

Beyond celebrating his musical journey, the event also served as a moment of national recognition, as it was used to honour President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his birthday, a gesture many attendees described as a mark of respect for leadership.

The anniversary concert organized by Mallam Yankee, held in a packed venue at the Eko Hotel and Suites, has been described by attendees as one of the most electrifying shows in recent times. The atmosphere was charged with nostalgia and excitement as a lineup of legendary performers took fans on a journey through the golden eras of Nigerian music.

Veteran artists such as Daddy Showkey, D’banj, 9ice, Tony Tetuila, and African China thrilled the audience with classic hits, evoking memories of the early 2000s and reinforcing their lasting influence on the industry.

Fast-rising entertainer Nasboi also delivered an energetic performance that resonated with younger fans, adding a contemporary touch to the night’s rich musical experience.

Notably, 2Baba’s performance stood out as the defining moment of the night, reaffirming his status as one of Africa’s greatest performers. Many fans described his performance as historic, particularly as the music icon delivered a powerful and emotionally charged set at a time many least expected such intensity. His stage command, vocal delivery, and connection with the audience was second to none.

In all, the concert was not just a celebration of 2Baba’s career milestones, but a testament to his enduring relevance and the unity within Nigeria’s music industry. It highlighted the journey of Afrobeats from local acclaim to global dominance, with 2Baba firmly positioned as one of its foundational pillars.
