WAFCON 2024: Not the result we expected – South Africa reacts after loss to Super Falcons

South Africa’s women team have claimed the 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the semi-final of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is “not the result we expected”.

Banyana Banyana conceded a late goal scored by Michelle Alozie, to bow out of contention for the trophy on Tuesday night.

Rasheedat Ajibade had opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Linda Motlhalo equalized from 12 yards.

With the game heading towards extra time, Alozie’s long cross evaded everyone in the box and trickled into the net.

The result meant that South Africa, who are the defending champions, will now face either Ghana or Morocco in the third-place play-off.

A tweet from Banyana Banyana’s X page read: “It ends with a loss against Nigeria… not the result we expected.”
