The most expensive Premier League deals in the January transfer window

It was not the most exciting January transfer window we can remember, but Premier League clubs were nonetheless responsible for the most expensive deals this past month.

With window now closed until the summer, here are the five biggest moves that happened in the winter.

5. Lucas Paqueta: West Ham to Flamengo – £36.5m

It feels like a distant memory now, but the Lucas Paqueta saga came to a conclusion last week. The Brazilian midfielder returned to his homeland after pushing for a January exit, joining boyhood club Flamengo in a £36.5m deal.

Paqueta had offers from clubs in Europe, but turned them down because he wanted to be in Brazil for his “mental health” and to “regain peace”.

4. Brennan Johnson: Spurs to Crystal Palace – £35m

You can forgive Crystal Palace fans for being down on their club’s transfer business this season. They have lost two key pillars in Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi, and spent a lot of money on Brennan Johnson and Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Johnson is not a bad player by any means, but he does not provide the same level of creativity or excitement as Eze.

3. Jorgen Strand Larsen: Wolves to Crystal Palace – £43m

After holding out in the summer amid a flurry of interest in the striker, Wolves finally sold Jorgen Strand Larsen on Deadline Day to Crystal Palace for £43m plus £5m in potential add-ons.

The Norwegian centre-forward was meant to arrive as a replacement for the outgoing Jean-Philippe Mateta, but the France international’s move to AC Milan fell through after his medical reportedly unearthed a serious knee injury.

2. Jeremy Jacquet: Rennes to Liverpool – £55m

Liverpool finally got the centre-back they need. Only they didn’t. At least not yet, because Jeremy Jacquet is set to arrive in the summer after the Reds agreed to pay Rennes £55m plus £5m in potential add-ons for the defender on Deadline Day.

1. Antoine Semenyo: Bournemouth to Manchester City – £62.5million

The most in-demand player on the market last month, Manchester City beat Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs to the signing of Antoine Semenyo. The winger is already proving to be well worth the £62.5m plus £1.5M in add-ons they paid Bournemouth, having registered four goals and an assist in his first five games at City.
