Super Eagles: Okoye ready to battle Nwabali for number one spot

Maduka Okoye is ready to battle for the Super Eagles number one goalkeeping position, DAILY POST reports.

The Udinese shot stopper was installed as Super Eagles’ first choice during the reign of former head coach, Gernot Rohr.

Okoye, however, lost his position after a poor showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The 25-year-old also endured a difficult spell at Watford, and was not invited to the Super Eagles for a number of years.

The former Sparta Rotterdam goalie has now revived his career at Serie outfit, Udinese.

Okoye put up a stellar display in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia on Friday night.

He is now looking forward to reclaiming his position in the Super Eagles.

“Of course, we know what Nwabali has done for our country. He’s a very good goalkeeper and I think he deserves it because I never got to the level I have with the Super Eagles,” he told Flashscore.

“So, I really hope that I get to my level and he deserves to play right now, but I think there are always going to be some chances and opportunities, and I just have to be ready when they’re coming.”
