Goal drought: Enyimba advised to go for grassroots players

Some fans of Enyimba Football Club of Aba have advised the team’s management to source players from grassroots clubs in order to arrest the goal drought in the team.

Enyimba had in the past seven weeks lost 2-0 to Al Masry in the CAF Confederation Cup, drew 0-0 with Rangers of Enugu, drew 2-2 with Zamalek of Egypt, 0-0 with Sunshine of Akure, lost 3-0 to Black Bull of Mozambique, drew 0-0 with Plateau United of Jos before drawing again 0-0 with Bendel Insurance of Benin, to the disappointment of its supporters.

Some Enyimba fans, who spoke to DAILY POST at the final match of Okey Ebere Under 21 Unity Football tournament in Ndiolumbe, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State, said that their darling team should go for raw young talents in the locality, and focus less on signing big names.

“The management should go to grassroots football competitions like this and harvest players, especially the strikers who are hungry for success.

“Our frontline should be sharp,” one of the Enyimba fans, Jude Cherechi said.

Meanwhile, Dynamic Football Club defeated Bright Stars FC of Amaiyi Nvosi 1-0 to lift the annual cup.

Declaring the final tournament open at the Ndiolumbe primary school, Mr. Okechukwu Onwuka who sponsored the competition said it was used to discover future stars for Abia State and Nigeria, to unify the people, as well as encourage friendship and community development.

Represented by Pastor Chidiebere Onwuka, he said the competition provided the opportunity for players to launch themselves into international stars.

Dynamic FC pocketed one million N1 million star prize while N500,000 and N250,000, respectively went to runner up, Bright Stars FC of Amaiyi Nvosi and Young Stars FC of Ndiolumbe, who came third.
