Europa League: Zirkzee takes swipe at Man Utd fans who left Old Trafford
Manchester United striker, Joshua Zirkzee has aimed a dig at the club’s fans who left Old Trafford Stadium early after the Red Devils’ miraculous Europa League win against Lyon on Thursday night.
Trailing by two goals, Man United were minutes away from an embarrassing Europa League exit at the hands of Lyon.
The Premier League club had played a 2-2 draw in the first leg in France last week.
However, in the second leg, Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot gave Man United a 2-0 lead just before half-time.
But the French Ligue 1 side equalized in the second half to force the game into extra-time, thanks to goals from Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico.
In extra-time, Lyon scored two goals despite playing with 10-men following Tolisso’s red card in the 89th minute.
At this point, many Man United fans started leaving Old Trafford.
But Bruno Fernandes’ penalty and a strike from Kobbie Mainoo ensured Man United levelled the tie.
As the tie was heading to penalties, Harry Maguire powered a header home to spark incredible scenes inside Old Trafford and send Manchester United into the semi-final where they will face Athletic Club.
But Zirkzee took a swipe at the fans who left Old Trafford before the end of the match with a post on Instagram.
“To all the fans who left when we were down,” the Dutchman wrote on a video of the joyous scenes at full-time. “Have a listen to this,” he added.
Zirkzee was in the stands for Man United’s incredible victory after he sustained a hamstring injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season.
