‘Didn’t know I was alive until goalkeeper touched me’ – Osimhen recounts near-death injury

Super Eagles attacker, Victor Osimhen, has opened up on his ‘near-death’ experience during Napoli’s Serie A game against Inter Milan in 2021.

That particular incident nearly ended the former Lille’s striker’s career and his sight.

Osimhen spoke with Daddy Freeze in an interview where he recounted the terrifying moment that happened at San Siro.

Osimhen was hit in the face by an Inter Milan defender as he tried to head the ball.

“All the bones on my face were broken,” he said, talking about the collision with Škriniar.

The incident left the Nigerian forward with severe fractures to his cheekbone and eye socket, requiring urgent surgery.

The striker stayed away from football for weeks and he has continued to wear a protective face mask during matches.

“I was looking blank until their goalkeeper touched me – that was when I knew I was alive. It was a near-death injury,” he said.

“I never knew the injury was that bad.

“Then, they did an X-ray, not even an MRI. The doctor came and said I had to do surgery, as quickly as possible.

“He said they will go through my jaw and I cannot hit there for the rest of my life,” Osimhen explained.

“So I asked him what’s the risk [of not wearing the masks) and he said, ‘if you get the same hit again, you’re done.’

Osimhen is yet to decide his next destination despite interest from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Juventus, and Galatasaray.
