Club World Cup 2025: Palmeiras vs Al Ahly match suspended
The Group A clash at the Club World Cup between Brazil’s Palmeiras and Al Ahly of Egypt was suspended after an hour on Thursday, due to an expected storm around the MetLife Stadium.
It is the second time a fixture at the tournament has been interrupted due to the weather.
Referee Anthony Taylor ordered both sets of players to leave the pitch immediately, with Palmeiras leading 2–0.
Repeated announcements over the stadium public address system instructed the public to leave their seats and take shelter inside the stadium concourse because of the threat of “severe weather”, although fans were slow to move out.
The start of the Group F match in Orlando on Tuesday between South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan of South Korea was delayed by 65 minutes due to the threat of lightning.
