Ruben Amorim, Manchester United head coach, has defended goalkeeper Andre Onana after his side’s Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town on Wednesday.

Recall that Man United was beaten by Grimsby Town in a penalty shoot-out at Blundell Park, which allowed Grimsby to advance to the next stage of the Carabao Cup.

Onana was beaten at his near post for Charles Vernam’s first goal for Grimsby Town.

The Cameroonian also completely missed the ball from a corner, which allowed Tyrell Warren to double Grimsby’s lead.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Amorim was asked if the Red Devils have a goalkeeping issue with Onana. The Portuguese replied:

“With all due respect, when you play against a fourth-division team, it is not the goalkeeper, it is everything.

“It is the environment, it is the way we face the competition. We know that at the moment, everything people will pay attention to will be everything. It is going to be massive, every detail.

“We show that performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud.”
