The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed as “wishful thinking” the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s recent prediction that President Bola Tinubu will be a one-term leader, accusing the opposition party of engaging in political fantasy and lacking any real standing in national politics.
In a statement on Wednesday signed by the Lagos APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the ruling party ridiculed the ADC’s claim that Tinubu would be voted out in 2027, calling it “idle talk”.
Oladejo accused the ADC of delusions of relevance, stating that it has never tasted power at the center and is unlikely to do so in this lifetime.
According to the APC, Tinubu’s administration is laying solid foundations for a lasting transformation and is already implementing bold, people-oriented policies that previous leaders lacked the courage to pursue.
The party pointed to recent by-election victories as evidence of growing national support and a referendum on Tinubu’s leadership.
“It is rather convenient for a party that has no record of winning elections at the national level to begin to write imaginary scripts about the tenure of a leader whose political sagacity, track record of service, and capacity to deliver are beyond question.
“President Tinubu has only just begun the hard work of resetting Nigeria on the path of sustainable growth and progress. Nigerians are already seeing bold, people-oriented policies that lesser leaders have shied away from for decades.
“Our people say, “You don’t learn to walk by first attempting to run.” The APC government under Tinubu is laying solid foundations, step by step, for lasting transformation, while the ADC continues to prance about without roots or direction. Another proverb teaches us that “A child who washes his hands clean will dine with elders,” the statement read.
The APC also dismissed the ADC’s attempt to shape the 2027 political narrative as premature and unfounded, asserting that Tinubu’s political pedigree, sacrifice for democracy, and proven capacity to deliver had earned him his place at the leadership table.
The statement mocked the ADC and urged Nigerians to ignore what it called distractions from “political lightweights” and remain steadfast in their support for Tinubu’s government.
“As our people wisely remind us, “The hen’s cackle does not stop the sunrise.” No amount of idle chatter from the ADC can derail the historic mandate and steady leadership of President Tinubu. The so-called prophecy of a one-term presidency is nothing but wishful thinking from a party whose best days are behind it- if indeed it ever had any.
“The Lagos APC urges Nigerians to ignore the distractions of political lightweights and remain steadfast in supporting President Tinubu’s administration. The ADC, an Association of Serial Defectors, is already on political life support and will soon fizzle into oblivion,” the statement added.
The APC’s reaction came in response to a statement released by the ADC on Tuesday, in which the opposition party declared unequivocally that Tinubu would leave office in 2027.
In its statement, signed by National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC had criticised the Tinubu administration for what it described as a complete failure of governance across multiple fronts, including national security, the economy, human rights, and social development.
The ADC said that any talk of Tinubu staying in office beyond one term is not only presumptuous but also dangerously disconnected from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
The ADC accused the President of presiding over unprecedented levels of hunger, poverty, and insecurity.
It stated that bandits and terrorists now operate with impunity, while the government taxes citizens “to death” from Abuja as armed groups levy their own taxes in rural parts of the North.
According to the party, Nigeria’s security situation has degenerated into national trauma, and the administration has shown neither the will nor the capacity to stop it.
On the economic front, the ADC pointed to a collapsing naira, skyrocketing inflation, and the disappearance of the middle class as signs of failure.
It accused the government of policy inconsistency, wasteful spending, and embracing secrecy as a governance style.
The party also raised concerns about the collapse of the power sector, ongoing blackouts, and unaccounted billions allegedly spent with no improvement in energy supply.
On governance, the ADC alleged that the Tinubu administration has become authoritarian, ignoring court orders, harassing journalists, and brutalizing peaceful protesters.
It further accused the President of attempting to replicate in Nigeria what he allegedly perfected in Lagos—centralised political control, the installation of loyalists, and the dismantling of democratic checks.
The party concluded with a warning that come 2027, the contest would not be between APC and ADC, but between the APC and the Nigerian people.
“If anything, in two short years, he has shown Nigeria what he is capable of doing. He has divided the country like no other President before him and sent the majority of Nigerians deeper into poverty.
“More innocent lives have been lost under him, and bandits have effectively taken control of a large swathes of our Northern territory. While the President taxes people and businesses to death from Abuja, bandits exert their own taxes in various states of the North.
“Under his watch, national security has degenerated into a cruel joke. Terrorists, bandits, and criminals now operate with total impunity. Citizens are kidnapped in broad daylight. Rural communities have become warzones. Insecurity has metastasized into national trauma, and the government has neither the will nor the capacity to stop it.
“The economy, meanwhile, is in free fall. The naira has collapsed. Inflation is out of control. Food prices have tripled in many parts of the country. Jobs are vanishing. The middle class is disappearing,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC urged Nigerians to resist what it called any attempts at entrenching a life presidency and to prepare for a political transition.
