APC Grapples With Setbacks Ahead Anambra Guber Poll
The resignation of a former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr George Moghalu, is the latest setback to hit the party ahead of the 2025 governorship election in the state, THE WHISTLER reports.
Moghalu, one of the foundation members of the APC, announced his decision to quit the party in a letter dated August 26, 2026.
The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority is one of the stalwarts of the APC in not just Anambra but the entire South-East and his resignation has further depleted the party’s ranks after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The APC had earlier suffered a major setback in its plans for the election when the senator representing Anambra South, Ifeanyi Ubah, died in London, United Kingdom, on July 27, 2024.
The late Ubah, who had already announced his intention to contest the governorship election, was tipped to pick the APC ticket.
Analysts believe that the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial poll will be a straight contest between Ubah and the incumbent, Soludo.
It was believed that with Ubah, the APC has a big chance to win the election, considering the senator’s reputation as a formidable grassroots politician, which saw him winning the Senate seat on the platform of the Young Progressives Party, YPP.
Shortly before his death, Ubah and his campaign council donated N71 million to enhance the effectiveness of the APC in Anambra State.
Many analysts are of the view that Ubah’s death had weakened APC’s chances in the election.
Meanwhile there are indications that Moghalu will join the Labour Party, LP, with the intention of contesting the Anambra guber poll on the party’s platform.
Moghalu had in an interview, in July 2024, confirmed his intention to contest the governorship election.
“Yes, I am interested in vying for the governorship of Anambra State. But I must stress that I am not desperate.
“Power belongs to God and He gives to whoever pleases Him at any time. If it pleases Him, using the people of Anambra State to make me their Governor, well, to Him be the glory.
“I am willing and ready to serve,” he had said at the time.
He also responded to speculations that he was planning to dump the APC for another party to facilitate his gubernatorial ambition. “I am still consulting widely, across party lines,” he said.
THE WHISTLER reports that Moghalu was at the centre of the crisis that rocked the Anambra APC during the 2021 governorship election in the state, which was eventually won by Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
After a controversial primary which produced Andy Uba as the APC candidate for the election, Moghalu, who participated in the primaries as a governorship aspirant, approached an Abuja Federal High Court to seek redress. He insisted that Andy Uba did not emerge as the APC candidate through a valid primary.
Moghalu asked the court to remove Uba and the APC from the list of gubernatorial candidates and political parties partaking in the Anambra governorship election.
He also demanded N122.5 million as damages, which include a refund for the fee paid for expression of interest and nomination forms and N100 million for the breach of contract to commence and conclude the primary election.
Although Andy Uba participated in the governorship election, coming third behind Soludo and Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the Supreme Court in April 2022 nullified his participation in the poll.
It is believed that the unresolved issues surrounding the 2021 APC primary election contributed to Moghalu’s decision to quit the party.
