Abia State indigene Mr. Joachim Achor has been appointed as Accountant-General of Anambra State by Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

The appointments according to a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, marked a significant departure from the traditional practice of reserving top government roles for indigenes and reflect Soludo’s commitment to building a diverse and competence-driven civil service.

According to the statement, the appointment was the outcome of a rigorous and transparent selection process.

Aburime added that the process includes computer-based testing, merit-based screening, and a final personal interview with the governor.

“This personalised interaction allowed the governor to deeply assess each candidate’s vision, alignment with the administration’s reform agenda, and their capacity to deliver on public service excellence,” the CPS said.

He also informed that the appointment of Achor, in particular, aligns with Soludo’s reform agenda, which is anchored on merit, inclusivity, and institutional integrity.

Achor, arrived in Anambra as a student and later served in the state during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. He was named the best corps member and received the NYSC State Merit Award. Based on his outstanding performance, he was offered automatic employment by the then-military administration. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a Director, Permanent Secretary, and now, Accountant-General.

Aburime said the appointments send a strong message that Anambra is open to all Nigerians who are ready to serve with excellence, regardless of their state of origin.

“It also sent a strong message: Anambra is open to all Nigerians. Talent will not be ignored because of ethnicity or origin. We are building a government anchored on merit, diversity, and service delivery,” he added.

Reacting to his appointment, Achor expressed deep gratitude to Soludo and the people of Anambra, describing the opportunity as “deeply humbling.”

“I owe a great debt of gratitude to Governor Soludo, a true nationalist and pan-Nigerian leader who values merit above state of origin,” he said.

He also acknowledged the support he received from the people of Anambra throughout his civil service journey, saying: “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve this state. I give glory to God for the grace to reach this level.”

Soludo’s appointments, the statement added, represent not just administrative decisions but a bold political statement aimed at redefining the values and culture of public service in Nigeria.
