Delta Senator Hosts PDP Defectors

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District, on Saturday hosted a strategic constituency meeting at his country home in Isoko South, welcoming former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The event, which drew APC leaders from the eleven wards of Isoko South Local Government Area, was marked by the declaration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the party’s sole gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 elections.

Speaking at the gathering, Senator Joel-Onowakpo emphasized the importance of party unity and commended the defection as a sign of growing confidence in the APC’s leadership.

“There is no distinction between old and new members. Everyone is APC,” he declared. “The leader of the APC in Delta State is the Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. This alignment follows the directives from the presidency and our national leadership.”

The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Local Content, made it clear that Oborevwori’s candidacy for 2027 is settled within the party.

“The Delta State governorship is not vacant,” he asserted. “We have an administration that is focused on delivering the dividends of democracy, and we must give them the needed support to complete their mandate.”

Senator Joel-Onowakpo urged all APC ward chairmen and local structures to ensure seamless registration of new members and warned against actions that might cause disunity.

Also present at the high-level meeting were key political figures, including APC Isoko nation leader Chief Lucky Esigie; Delta State Chief of Staff Hon. Johnson Erijo; former DESOPADEC Managing Director Odio Askia Ogeh; Delta State Commissioner for Land, Survey and Urban Development Chief Emamusi Obiodeh; and APC Isoko South Chairman Comrade Egbogbo Vincent.

The meeting climaxed with a vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas. The motion was moved by Hon. Ferguson Onwo, member representing Isoko South Constituency II, and seconded by Dr. Sylvester Onoyona, the APC’s 2023 House of Representatives candidate for Isoko North and South Federal Constituency.

“We are proud of these leaders who have continued to demonstrate integrity, vision, and commitment to service,” Onwo said, drawing a thunderous voice vote from attendees in support of the motion.

Other notable party leaders present included Hon. Bino Obowomano, High Chief Iduh Amadhe, Chief Louis Onofighe, Mrs. Hopelyn Akpotu-Ayu, Rear Admiral John Kpokpogri (rtd), Barr. Vincent Omorie, and a host of community and political stakeholders.

The gathering ended with a renewed call for unity, grassroots mobilisation, and loyalty to the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
