YouTube Set to Restrict Teenagers’ Access to Fitness and Weight-Related Films Amid Criticism

YouTube said on Thursday that it will restrict the amount of content that teenagers see that promotes and idealizes a particular degree of physical fitness or beauty. Teens worldwide are now being introduced to safety, which was initially implemented in the United States last year.

For the sake of safety and monitoring, the video-sharing platform is also launching a new feature that enables parents and caregivers to link to their teen’s account. This week, the film is being released worldwide.

The move comes as YouTube has faced criticism in recent years for potentially harming kids and exposing them to content that promotes eating disorders.

Newsng understands that this update builds on the parental controls that YouTube released in 2021, allowing parents to experiment with supervised accounts for children under the age of consent for internet services.

The company had previously stated that it intended to expand these services to include older age groups in the future.

YouTube will limit visibility to videos that compare physical traits and idealize specific fitness levels, body kinds, and weights. Separately, YouTube will prohibit access to films depicting “social aggression” such as non-contact fights and intimidation.

The Google-owned site adds that while this type of content may not be as detrimental as a single video, it can become problematic if exposed to kids repeatedly. To prevent this, YouTube will limit repeated recommendations of videos about these themes.

When a teen’s account is linked through the YouTube Family Centre, ‘parent’ accounts can see “insights into their teens’ channel activity on YouTube, including the number of uploads, subscriptions, and comments,” according to a September 4 blog post by James Beser, the director of product management for YouTube Youth.

We earlier reported that YouTube has launched a new creator-focused artificial intelligence (AI) tool. This new tool, powered by Google’s in-house AI chatbot, Gemini, allows platform video makers to brainstorm video ideas.

The Gemini AI program may help users come up with thumbnail concepts, and movie titles, and outline the video.
