Senate President Godswill Akpabio has praised Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for his courage and commitment to his people, recalling how the lawmaker stood as a surety for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), despite the risks involved.
Speaking at Abaribe’s 70th birthday celebration, held at the International Conference Center in Umuahia over the weekend, Akpabio described him as a fearless leader who has consistently put the interests of his constituents above personal safety.
“You took a risk for your people. When you signed the bail bond for Nnamdi Kanu, people were shocked. They asked why a senator would take this kind of risk, but you told me that even if he ran away, you were ready to go to prison for what he stood for.”
Akpabio extolled Abaribe’s contributions to national development, describing him as a man of integrity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to his people.
He emphasized Abaribe’s political influence, noting that his party affiliation is secondary to his popularity among the people of Abia South Senatorial District.
“Abaribe’s party is the people. He does not need a political platform to win elections because the people of Abia South and Abia State at large recognize his value,” Akpabio stated.
The event also provided an opportunity for Akpabio to acknowledge the challenges of infrastructural development in Abia State.
He highlighted the need for improvements in road networks, specifically mentioning the Ikot-Ekpene-Umuahia road, which he said is still in need of urgent attention.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor, he recalled key projects such as the international airport he built, which he proudly noted was his preferred landing spot upon arrival for the event.
As he concluded his remarks, Akpabio extended prayers and best wishes to Abaribe, wishing him a long life and continued impact on the nation.
“God says three scores and ten, and you have achieved it. But for those who love God and are straightforward in life, God will add up to 30 more years. May you live to celebrate 100 plus,” he declared.
The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in his voice, lauded Abaribe’s leadership qualities and contributions to the development of Abia State.
He assured attendees that his administration remains committed to continuing the legacy of progressive governance.
