You May End Up Like Saddam Hussein, Israel Warns Iran’s Supreme Leader
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, on Tuesday, warned that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei risks meeting “the same fate” as former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein if he continues attacking Israeli civilians.
Speaking at a briefing with senior military officials in Tel Aviv, Katz condemned the attacks on civilians which he said have led to dozens of deaths.
“I warn the Iranian dictator against persisting in these atrocities and launching missiles at Israeli citizens. He should remember what happened to the dictator in the neighboring country who chose this path against Israel,” Katz warned.
Hussein, who ruled Iraq from 1979 until his ouster in 2003, invaded Iran in 1980 and later fired Scud missiles at Israel during the First Gulf War in 1991.
Though Israel, under pressure from the United States, did not retaliate, Hussein’s regime collapsed when the U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq.
He was captured hiding in a hole beneath a farmhouse near Tikrit, tried by the Iraqi High Tribunal for crimes against humanity, and hanged in December 2006.
Katz’s remarks follow reports that Israeli planners had an opportunity to target Khamenei over the weekend.
According to U.S. officials, the plans were vetoed by President Donald Trump, who preffered diplomacy and offered Iran a deal instead.
The death toll in ongoing war between Israel and Iran as of Monday stood at 24 on the Israeli side, while 224 fatalities were recorded in Iran.
The numbers are expected to rise as the war enters its 5th day.
