Yola Floods: Casualty figures rise to 23 as Gov Fintiri visits
The number of people who died in the floods which ravaged communities in the Adamawa State capital on Sunday, July 27, was determined by Monday to have risen to 23.
The number was initially reported to be between two and five by the evening of Sunday, with many more said to be still missing, just as dozens of people were said to be injured.
By Monday afternoon when Governor Ahmadu Fintiri visited scenes of the floods in Yola South Local Government Area, he was briefed of the casualty increase by officials who had been involved in rescue mission since after the flood.
Governor Fintiri, who was outside the state at the time of the floods, visited the scenes upon his return Monday, for personal assessment and to commiserate with victims.
Addressing the victims at the temporary camp for the displaced at Aliyu Mustafa College Yola, Governor Fintiri described the situation as tragic but promised adequate remedy.
He said, “We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). From there, we will take the necessary steps.”
