Yobe Govt. Initiates Cash-For-Rent Support For Flood Victims
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), has offered financial support to 102 households displaced by the recent flood in Potiskum town.
Its Executive Secretary, Dr Mohammad Goje, disclosed this in a statement in Damaturu on Monday.
He said the gesture would enable the displaced families to pay for two-month rent in safe and dignified shelter in their communities.
Goje said the displaced families were linked with local agents to assist them in accessing the accommodation.
The YOSEMA helmsman said the households, comprising 600 individuals, were taking temporary shelter at Sabon Gari Primary School, following the destruction of their houses by flood.
He said the agency would provide free meals, blankets, mats, soaps, buckets, kettles mosquito nets and detergents to the affected persons.
Goje said the agency has also completed registration of seven out of the 21 communities affected by the disaster as at Saturday Aug. 16, adding that validation of others was on course.
He said the communities registered comprised 361 households and 2,634 individuals.
The executive secretary commended development partners including UNICEF, WHO, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Centre for Civilians in Conflict.
Others are International Organisation for Migration (IOM), International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), North East Development Commission (NEDC), and security agencies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one person died, and many houses destroyed or submerged in Potiskum, following a flood triggered by heavy downpour on Saturday.
