Yamal Extends Barcelona Contract, Takes Messi Jersey Number

Barcelona have confirmed that Lamine Yamal will wear the iconic number 10 shirt starting from the 2025-26 season.
The club announced on social media on Wednesday that the teenager will become the club’s new number 10.
Yamal graduated from the club’s famed academy, La Masia.
Club icon Lionel Messi left the number for Ansu Fati in 2021, when he left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain.
Yamal also extended his contract with the club until 2031, while expressing his desire to win many trophies in the future.
He said: “This is the beginning of a journey that I hope will be very long and full of victories.
“To keep growing, because I’m still very young, but above all to keep winning … I’ll give everything to make the fans happy … This is my lifetime club and the best in the world.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Yamal expressed his confidence, saying he hopes to “keep enjoying my football and to have an even better season than the last.”
Yamal has scored 25 goals for the club in over 100 appearances, making his debut in 2023 at the age of 15 wearing the number 41 shirt.
After a season wearing the 27, last summer Yamal followed in Messi’s footsteps by taking the number 19, which the Argentine wore at the club between 2005, and 2008.
The likes of Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo have worn the iconic number 10 shirt for Barcelona in the past.
