Wike Approves Emergency Contract To Tackle Erosion In FCT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has approved the award of an emergency contract for erosion control and several other key infrastructural projects, including the construction of access roads in Durumi and Mabushi Districts.

The acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Mr Richard Dauda, disclosed this in Abuja while briefing journalists after the 14th Executive Committee meeting chaired by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Dauda stated that the committee approved the construction of several access roads, drainages, and culverts totalling about 1.7 kilometres in the Durumi District, particularly around the Apostolic Church area.

He added that similar infrastructural upgrades were approved for Mabushi District, especially Kez Udezue Street and surrounding roads.

He explained that the Mabushi project would include the provision of access roads, underground drainage systems, street lighting, water supply, and sewage management facilities to improve the area’s livability and connectivity.

He highlighted the approval of an emergency erosion control contract to safeguard a major water pipeline from Lower Usuma Dam, stretching through Kubwa to Airport Road and down to Gwagwalada.

The erosion, he warned, posed a significant threat to the water supply to multiple districts within the FCT.

“Erosion had taken place on the major pipeline feeding the various tanks up to Gwagwalada and it was a threat to the major water supply to all these areas.

“A Chinese company, CGC Nigeria Ltd., was invited to carry out the emergency work on the sites and the approval at the committee’s meeting was to finalise the emergency repair,” Dauda said.

Dauda added that, the committee also approved the complete renovation, furnishing, and technical installations at the Department of State Security (DSS) Headquarters, as well as the construction of a block of Magistrate Court in Jabi.

“Another memo was for the construction of one block of a Magistrate Court in Jabi,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mr Chidi Amadi, revealed that 13 memos were presented during the meeting, with nine of them approved.

He noted that the approvals are part of ongoing efforts to deepen infrastructure development and enhance the capital city’s environment.
