Edo State Governor, Governor Monday Okpebholo has revealed the objectives behind the establishment of a University of Sports in the state.
It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu signed a bill establishing Federal University of Sports at Afuze, the headquarters of Owan East Local Government into law on Tuesday.
Okpebholo praised Tinubu for assenting to the bill, while describing it as a landmark decision which marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to expanding access to quality higher education and fostering intellectual growth.
He said: “Today, we celebrate a victory for the people of Edo State. The establishment of the Federal University of Sports is a testament to President Tinubu’s dedication to advancing education in Nigeria. This institution will not only provide opportunities for our teeming youths but also serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development in our State and the nation at large.”
He acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organizations, who contributed to the realization of this project.
He said the University will provide a platform for cutting-edge research, innovation, and the development of highly skilled graduates.
Okpebholo said: “This University is a dream come true for many generations of Edo State indigenes.
“It will provide a platform for cutting-edge research, innovation, and the development of highly skilled graduates who will contribute meaningfully to our society. We are confident that the Federal University of Sports will quickly become a centre of academic excellence, attracting students and scholars from across the country and beyond.”
It would be recalled that in 2023, Senator Ned Nwoko established the first-ever sports university in Nigeria in Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta state.
