Why Sahin Was Sacked—Bolt Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund Former Coach, Nuri Sahin

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the sacking of Nuri Sahin as the club’s head coach after the 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Sahin has paid the price following a run of disappointing performances, which has seen the club lose their last four games in all competitions.

The club can only boast of just one win in their last nine games in all competitions; they have also lost all their matches in 2025.

The German club announced Sahin’s sacking with a statement on their website on Wednesday.

The statement reads: “Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments.

“After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games… we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation.”

Dortmund’s managing director, Lars Ricken, said the club lost belief in Sahin, and they had to act fast to achieve their objectives for the season.

He said, “We really appreciate Nuri and his work; we wanted to work together for a long time and, until recently, had hoped we could turn things around.

“However, we have now lost belief in being able to achieve our sporting goals with the current setup. This decision hurts me personally, but it was now unavoidable after the game in Bologna.”

Sahin was appointed as Dortmund’s coach in the summer after serving as assistant under Edin Terzic, who departed in May.

The former Dortmund midfielder was disappointed with the club’s form but wished them all the best.

He said, “Unfortunately, we have not succeeded in fulfilling Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season as it currently stands. I wish this special club all the best.”

Dortmund also confirmed that Mike Tullberg will temporarily take charge of the team for the match against SV Werder Bremen on Saturday.

The 39-year-old has been the head coach of the BVB U19 side since 2020. He previously coached the Black & Yellows’ U23 team for a year.

Sahin took charge of 27 matches in all competitions, winning 12, losing 11, and drawing four.

Their total of 25 points from 18 games—six outside the top four—is their lowest at this stage since Jürgen Klopp’s final season when they sat bottom with only 16 points but still ended up qualifying for Europe.

Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag is the favourite to become the coach of Dortmund.
