Why N/Assembly Will Deepen Collaboration With Executive – Akpabio

The National Assembly will continue to deepen its collaboration with the Executive arm, despite the “rubber stamp” tag on the federal legislature.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, affirmed this on Thursday in his welcome address at a joint session with President Bola Tinubu, in commemoration of the June 12 democracy day celebration.
According to him, such collaboration is in the overall interest of the Nigerian people, stressing that governance is about partnership and not a contest.
“The lesson is clear: where governance is a partnership, progress follows. But where governance is a contest, the people suffer. Therefore as we commemorate 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, we must renew our national commitment to foster collaboration between the different arms of government.
“Democracy is not a gift. It is a trust we must protect. To the youth, you must not treat democracy with apathy. To civil society, you must not let memory fade. To the media, we must be held accountable through responsible journalism. And to every Nigerian, democracy must not be reduced to election days. It must live in our values, our institutions, and our daily lives,” Akpabio said.
He listed the United States, Rwanda, Ghana and South Africa among democracies that are thriving on executive-legislature collaboration.
Akpabio pledged the commitment of the National Assembly to continue championing policies that uplift the poor, empower the youth, strengthen the economy, and defend the dignity of every citizen and the nation.
“As President of the Senate, I reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the 10th National Assembly to the cause of the Nigerian people. We will continue to champion every policy that uplifts the poor, empowers our youth, strengthens our economy, and defends the dignity of every citizen and the nation,” he said.
The President of the Senate submitted that the 10th National Assembly has played its part in national affairs with diligence and distinction.
According to him, the legislature, from its inception, has demonstrated a renewed vigour for addressing the country’s complex challenges through purposeful legislation.
