Why Delta Gov, Predecessor Dumped PDP For APC
Facts emerged on Wednesday that Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his immediate predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to save their political future.
Governor Oborevwori was said to have been under pressure to defect to the APC or throw his predecessor under the bus.
Ex-Governor Okowa is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial infractions to the tune of N1.3trn.
The ex-governor was arrested and detained by EFCC operatives at the commission’s facility in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, last November.
He is presently on administrative bail from the EFCC, as a preliminary investigation into his case is still ongoing.
Oborevwori and Okowa defected with hundreds of their followers, taking with them the existing PDP structure in the state.
A former Delta senator, James Manager, announced the high-profile defections on Wednesday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, after a marathon meeting held at the government house.
The manager said, “All PDP members in the state, including the governor, former Governor Okowa, the speaker, the state party chairman, all the local government chairmen and others, have agreed to move to the APC.”
In a related development, a member of the House of Representatives, Oluwole Oke, also on Wednesday, resigned from the PDP.
Oke, who is a six-termer, represents the Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in Osun State.
The lawmaker said he decided to leave the PDP after consulting with his political associates, friends, and family members.
The Rep, who was said to have personally confirmed his exit from the PDP, did not state his next line of action.
