WAEC Clarifies Result Withholding Policy Amid Woman’s Plea
The West African Examinations Council has addressed a viral report about a mother pleading for her son’s WAEC certificate release, citing his alleged depression due to delayed results.
In the report titled “RE: Release My Son’s WAEC Certificate Now, He’s Slipping Into Depression–Mother Cries Out,” a distressed mother, Princess Temitope Aladegoroye, pleaded with WAEC to release her son’s 2023 WASSCE result.
She alleged that the prolonged delay had pushed the teenager into depression after failing to gain admission into a tertiary institution.
However, WAEC, in a press statement signed on Thursday by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, emphasised that results are withheld only when examination malpractice or irregularities are reported, and due process is followed.
“We have read the publication, with deep sense of concern, and as an organisation that takes pleasure in rendering quality service to the Nigerian child, we have decided not to remain silent over the incident. We categorically reject this claim and wish to clarify the facts,” the statement said.
According to WAEC, affected candidates are notified and given opportunities to respond to allegations through the Notice of Examinations Malpractice portal, publicly communicated via press releases and social media.
“When a report on acts of examination malpractice and other irregularities regarding the conduct of an examination is received by WAEC, the results of affected candidate(s) are withheld pending investigations,” Adesina said.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, stating that all malpractice cases are investigated according to established rules and regulations. WAEC assured stakeholders of its dedication to quality assessment and education enhancement in West Africa.
“The West African Examinations Council is a law-abiding organisation that follows due process in all its activities.
“All the reported cases of examination malpractice are investigated in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for dealing with cases of irregularities in the Council’s examinations pursuant with the law,” the statement added.
The complainant, however, maintained that she has received no official communication about her son’s case.
“We’ve checked the portal, nothing has been sent to us. If there’s truly a case, why not write to us directly?,” she queried.
