VIDEO: Trump, Putin Finally Meet For Ukraine Peace Negotiations
President Donald Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin are meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, to find a path toward ending the war in Ukraine.
The two leaders exchanged a warm greeting on the red carpet, shaking hands twice before travelling together in Trump’s presidential limousine, The Beast, to the summit venue, reports BBC.
Originally billed as a one-on-one, the summit began in a “three-on-three” format, with Trump joined by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, while Putin sat with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later confirmed that Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov would join in an “expanded format” of the talks.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the talks but reiterated that no sustainable peace can be achieved without Ukraine’s direct involvement.
“Security guarantees are needed. Lasting peace is needed,” he posted on X, adding that Russia must “end the war it started.”
The summit is expected to last up to seven hours, including a working lunch.
Trump has said he “won’t be happy” without a ceasefire agreement, though it depends on Putin who appears unwilling to abandon his alleged strategic goal of dominating Ukraine.
Both leaders are expected to address the media at a joint press conference later.
