Video: ‘I made nothing less than ₦10m monthly selling akara, bread’ — Gov. Eno

By Adegboyega Adeleye

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has revealed that he made not less than ₦10 million monthly from selling akara and bread before venturing into politics.

Eno disclosed this in a public gathering while recounting his entrepreneurial journey, explaining how he started with the sale of akara and bread before expanding the business to include a coffee shop.

The governor said the shop where he started the business is still in existence, recalling that he began by selling akara and bread to create what he called an “Akara Burger”.

“We still have that shop there. I started selling Akara and bread. Back then, I was doing Akara Burger. We open the bread and put it inside for you,” Eno said.

According to him, the business attracted customers heading to work, including workers at ExxonMobil, who patronised the akara and bread in the mornings.

“People going to Exxon Mobil will buy it in the morning, take coffee. We started coffee shop and then they will take it,” he said.

Eno said the business eventually became a significant source of income, generating at least ₦10 million every month.

“Every month, that Akara business and Bread used to give me nothing less than ₦10 million in a month,” he said.

“Not less than that,” the governor added.

The governor’s account offers a glimpse into his business activities before his emergence in politics, particularly his early involvement in food and hospitality ventures.

His remarks have also drawn attention because of the amount he said the akara and bread business generated at the time, with the disclosure generating discussion online about the scale of small businesses and the income they can produce.

Eno’s account comes amid renewed public discussion about akara businesses following comments by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu encouraging Nigerians to explore small-scale ventures as a means of generating income.
