US sanctions Sudanese Islamist actors for escalating war

The United States government has taken action against Sudanese Islamist actors, Gebreil Ibrahim Mohamed Fediel (Gebreil) and the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade (BBMB).

The State Department, in a statement over the weekend, accused the duo of undermining peace and stability in Sudan through their roles in the conflict escalation.

The Department of the Treasury sanctioned Mohamed Fediel and Al-Baraa Bin, pursuant to an Executive Order that targets “Persons Destabilizing Sudan and Undermining the Goal of a Democratic Transition.”

The action seeks to “limit Islamist influence in Sudan and curtail Iran’s regional activities” that have contributed to conflict, civilian suffering, and regional destabilization.

The US recalled how Sudanese actors became “a malign force” in the troubled nation, particularly during the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for 30 years.

The Islamists are accused of playing a major role in derailing democratic transitions by undermining the former civilian-led transitional government and the Framework Political Agreement process.

Their conduct, according to the State Department, contributed to the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.

The US government said that hardline Islamists continue to obstruct efforts to reach a ceasefire, while receiving technical support from the Iranian government, through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

America expressed its commitment to working with regional partners to achieve peace and stability in Sudan and vowed to use its tools to ensure that “Sudanese Islamists never regain power in Sudan.”

The sanction followed Friday’s announcement of a one-year peace plan developed by the United States and allies, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
