US Blames Hamas For Gaza War Continuation At UN Security Council
The United States has blamed Hamas for the continuation of the Gaza war and backed Israel’s decision to push ahead with its military campaign.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing in New York, acting US Representative to the UN Ambassador, Dorothy Shea, said that the conflict could end immediately if the group freed all hostages and relinquished control of the enclave.
Shea said Israel has “a right to decide what is necessary for its security, and what measures are appropriate to end the threat posed by Hamas and other similar groups.”
She accused Hamas of rejecting three ceasefire proposals, failing to negotiate in good faith, and using international recognition efforts as propaganda to justify the October 7 attacks.
“The simple truth is that this war could end today if Hamas let the hostages, and all of Gaza, go free,” she said.
The envoy dismissed genocide allegations against Israel as “politically motivated and categorically false,” describing them as part of a “deliberate, cynical propaganda campaign” to mask Hamas’ battlefield losses.
She stressed that civilian casualties were tragic but blamed Hamas for looting aid and embedding fighters among civilians.
“The Government of Israel did not make its decision to advance its military campaign in a vacuum, but after months of Hamas’ intransigence,” Shea said.
She added that the US supports humanitarian pauses, safe corridors, and direct aid delivery through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which she credited with providing over 110 million meals while preventing Hamas looting.
Her comments came as the UN Security Council met to discuss Israel’s recent decision to expand operations inside Gaza City.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, defended the plan as the “best way” to defeat Hamas, however, European governments criticised it as a potential violation of international humanitarian law.
Netanyahu also denied claims that Israel is deliberately starving civilians, insisting the deprivation in Gaza is caused by Hamas’ theft of aid. He said civilians will be moved to designated safe zones with food, medical care, and security.
The US reiterated that peace will only be possible if Hamas is removed from power, urging all countries to demand the immediate release of hostages and put an end to the fighting.
“As long as it remains, there will not be peace. Not for Israel and not for the Gazans who deserve to begin a new chapter, free of Hamas,” Shea told the Council.
