U.S. President Donald Trump said he and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have agreed to “immediately” commence negotiations that will bring to an end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a post on Wednesday via his Truth Social platform, Trump revealed that he had a “lengthy, productive phone call” with Putin where they discussed several issues, including bringing to a stop the war that has lasted for nearly three years.

The conversation is the first between both countries since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Trump said, “We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar, and various other subjects. We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering that Russia lost tens of millions of people and we, likewise, lost so many!”

According to Trump, they spoke about possible partnerships and the benefits of working together but agreed to first “stop the millions of deaths taking place in the war with Russia/Ukraine.

“President Putin even used my very strong campaign motto of “COMMON SENSE.” We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations,” Trump added.

The U.S. said Russia is fully committed to negotiations towards ending the war, stating that he will call Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and inform him of their conversation.

He also announced the appointment of U.S. top officials, including the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, to lead the negotiations.

Trump said, “Millions of people have died in a war that would not have happened if I were president, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost!

“I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call and for the release yesterday, of Marc Fogel, a wonderful man that I personally greeted last night at the White House. I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!” he added.

Confirming the conversation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Trump and Putin spoke about the Middle East, bilateral relations, Ukraine and a prisoner exchange between Washington and Moscow in a call that lasted for almost an hour and a half, according to the state-owned TASS news agency.

According to Peskov, Putin has invited Trump to Russia for a meeting.

“The Russian president invited the US president to visit Moscow and expressed his readiness to receive American officials in Russia in those areas of mutual interest, including, of course, the topic of the Ukrainian settlement.

“Putin and Trump also agreed to continue personal contacts, including arranging a face-to-face meeting,” the spokesperson added.
