UPDATED: TCN Restates Commitment To Stability Of National Grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that an earlier power outage experienced in parts of the country was not a nationwide grid collapse, as widely reported in the media.

THE WHISTLER recalls that the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had earlier confirmed the partial disturbance in a statement issued on Wednesday, stating that gradual restoration of power supply had commenced.

It assured its consumers that it would work closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid stabilises.

The statement reads, “Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.

“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”

But TCN, in a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, in Abuja Wednesday night, explained that the outage occurred due to the tripping of the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line at 11:34 AM today.

According to her, the Benin-Egbin 330kV transmission line had been on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing when the Omotosho-Ikeja line tripped at the Omotosho end.

The incident, she explained, caused a cascaded outage that affected the power supply to the Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo axes.

However, Mbah emphasised that contrary to earlier media reports, other parts of the national grid were unaffected by the incident.

TCN confirmed that engineers worked swiftly to resolve the issue, and the affected transmission line has since been fully restored.

The company also reassured Nigerians of its ongoing efforts to enhance the stability of the national grid.

“We assure Nigerians of our commitment to the efficient delivery of bulk power across the nation as we continue to implement measures to enhance the stability of the national grid,” the statement read.

The TCN urged the public to rely on accurate information from official channels and avoid misinformation that may cause unnecessary panic.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to clarify that at 11:34 hours today, the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line tripped at the Omotosho end.

“At the time, the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing. The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage affecting the Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo axes.

“However, all other parts of the grid remained unaffected, contrary to reports of a grid collapse in the media. The line has been successfully restored, and normal power supply has been fully restored to the affected areas.

“We assure Nigerians of our commitment to the efficient delivery of bulk power across the nation as we continue to implement measures to enhance the stability of the national grid,” she said.
