UNIOSUNTH defends sending patients away at night

The Osun State University Teaching Hospital, UNIOSUNTH, has addressed accusations of discharging patients from its facility on Monday night.

The hospital stated that the decision was necessitated by the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, and the Assembly of Health Care Professionals.

According to UNIOSUNTH’s Public Relations Officer, Wale Ajibolu, the hospital’s management had engaged in extensive discussions with union representatives on Monday, hoping to persuade them to pause the strike.

Ajibolu disclosed that these discussions lasted into the evening, with the management insisting on the unique role and obligations of the hospital.

However, despite their efforts, the union declined to halt the strike, forcing the hospital to take necessary action.

“The management met the union till late evening to suspend the ongoing JOHESU strike.

“We let them see reasons that we are a hospital and our own case is peculiar.

“But they refused and the management had to do the needful,” he said.

DAILY POST gathered that a relative of a patient admitted in the hospital had raised the alarm on Tuesday morning that the hospital management around 8:00 pm on Monday ordered their patients to leave the hospital immediately.

He wrote, “Gov ADELEKE must hear this. UNIOSUN TEACHING HOSPITAL workers embarked on strike since morning and they never informed the patients until 8 p.m tonight and ordered all patients to leave the hospital immediately, including pregnant women who were about to deliver.

“Relatives and their patients are left stranded, especially those from outside Osogbo. The government should come to people’s aid. You can fact check me. This action is not only barbaric but pure wickedness on the part of the striking workers.

“Why the midnight? It is unfair. A lot of patients don’t know where to go.”
