UNICEF Raises Alarm Over Low Birth Registration In Northeastern Nigeria

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the low rate of birth registration in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, revealing that only 3 out of 10 children in these states have their births registered.

According to Officer-in-Charge of the UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Joseph Senesie, over half a million children aged 0-59 months have been supported with birth registration by UNICEF and donors in the affected states.

Senesie made this disclosure during a Media Dialogue on Journalism Ethics and Child Rights Reporting in Damaturu on Tuesday.

He emphasised UNICEF’s commitment to promoting the wellbeing of children in northeast Nigeria, particularly those affected by conflict.

“UNICEF, in collaboration with governments in the northeast region, is saving the lives of children and giving them the opportunity to thrive.

“From nutrition to sanitation and education, UNICEF is at the forefront of giving children affected by conflict a voice”, Senesie said.

Senesie expressed optimism that training journalists would enhance the quality and quantity of child rights stories from the region.

He also reaffirmed UNICEF’s dedication to collaborating with partners, including the media, to advance the rights and wellbeing of children in northeast Nigeria.
