UniAbuja Celebrates Governor Okpebholo’s Supreme Court Victory

The University of Abuja community has extended warm congratulations to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his victory.

In a statement issued by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Patricia Manko Lar, the university expressed pride in the governor’s achievement, describing it as a well-deserved triumph for both his party and the people of Edo State.

“We have no doubt that this victory is truly well deserved, not only for your party and the good people of Edo State but also as a proud and inspiring moment for the Alumni Association of our great university,” Professor Lar stated.

While rejoicing with the university’s alumnus, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor urged Governor Okpebholo to maintain his commitment to credible, people-focused leadership.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Thursday by a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, the Supreme Court had dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election.

The court ruled that the petition lacked merit, stating that the appellants failed to provide credible evidence to substantiate claims of electoral irregularities, including allegations of over-voting and non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

The ruling affirmed earlier decisions by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on April 2, 2025, and the Court of Appeal on May 29, 2025, both of which upheld Okpebholo’s victory.
