Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the Minister of Works, has distinguished himself as an exceptional leader whose vision and work ethic have set new standards in public service.
Known for competence, diligence, and commitment to excellence, Umahi has built an impressive track record of success, both as the former Governor of Ebonyi State and now as Minister of Works in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
During his tenure as governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023, Umahi transformed one of South East’s most underdeveloped states into a model of infrastructural excellence. His administration’s landmark projects have left an indelible mark on the state’s development trajectory.
One of the key achievements of his tenure as governor was the construction of the Ebonyi State International Airport, which is a world-class facility that has enhanced the state’s economic prospects by facilitating trade and positioning Ebonyi as an investment destination in the South East.
Umahi also prioritised the use of concrete technology in road construction and completed over 1,500 kilometers of durable concrete roads across the state. Major projects like the Abakaliki-Afikpo Expressway and the Abakaliki Ring Road stand as testimonies to his commitment to lasting infrastructure.
The Ebonyi Shopping Mall, modeled after the famous Dubai Mall, is a modern commercial hub that has generated employment and stimulated economic activity in the state. Similarly, the Abakaliki Stadium has become vital to sports development and youth engagement.
Under Umahi’s leadership, Ebonyi made remarkable strides in education and healthcare. His administration established the King David University of Medical Sciences, upgraded the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital with modern equipment, and revitalized numerous general hospitals to create a model rural healthcare system in the state. The education sector also saw substantial investments in infrastructure and scholarship programmes for underprivileged students.
As Minister of Works in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Engr. Umahi has expanded his infrastructure development vision to the national stage. He has taken up the challenge of delivering key infrastructure such as the Second Niger Bridge that will drive economic growth and development across the country. This critical infrastructure links the southeastern region to other parts of the country and is expected to ease traffic congestion, boost trade, and enhance the movement of goods and services. The bridge is not only a symbol of unity but also a vital economic artery for the entire nation.
Umahi’s practical approach to road construction and rehabilitation has earned public acclaim, as citizens have experienced tangible improvements in road infrastructure nationwide.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, which is being completed under his supervision, has improved connectivity to Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Under Umahi’s leadership, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway is also progressing rapidly with modern road construction techniques being employed to ensure durability and efficiency. The expressway, once completed, will enhance the socio-economic activities of millions of Nigerians.
As minister of works, Umahi has bridged Federal Government initiatives with regional development needs of the South East. Working closely with President Tinubu, Umahi has continued to advance the administration’s infrastructure development agenda despite economic challenges.
