The UK received 108,138 asylum applications in 2024, marking the highest number recorded in any 12-month period since 2001.

According to a Home Office report, this represents an 18% increase from the 91,811 applications recorded in 2023.

Despite the rise in applications, the number of approved asylum claims fell significantly, dropping from 63,000 to 39,600.

However, the number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels while awaiting a decision has increased, standing at 38,079 according to the report, even though the Labour government had pledged to clamp down on them.

The data also revealed that the number of age assessments carried out due to suspicions that an applicant was over 18 reached a record 6,270 cases, with 1,873 individuals found to be adults despite claiming to be minors.

The report also revealed that 87% of the UK asylum seekers are men.

UK MP Rupert Lowe reacted strongly to the information that most of the applicants are men, while calling for tougher immigration controls.

“These are not desperate women and children. They are young foreign men from cultures that do not share our values and have no respect for women.”

“34,978 small boat migrants claimed asylum last year. They entered the UK illegally. Every single one should be detained and deported. No exceptions,” he stated.

He further criticised the government’s record on deportations, noting that only 3% of asylum seekers had been removed from the country.

According to Home Office data, 8,200 migrants were forcibly removed in 2024, with Albanians being the most frequently deported nationality. However, overall small boat arrivals increased by 25% over the past year.
