Ukraine, Russia Ready For Negotiations, Trump Tells US Congress
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed commitment to negotiating an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday, Trump said he had received a letter from Zelenskiy stating that Ukraine was ready to engage in talks as soon as possible to work toward a lasting peace.
“Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians,” Trump said, quoting the letter.
He also claimed to have received “strong signals” from Russia that it was prepared to negotiate. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” he added.
“It’s time to stop this madness, halt the killing, and end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” Trump said.
The U.S. president also mentioned that Ukraine was ready to sign the minerals agreement, which he described as being crucial for securing continued American support for Ukraine’s defense.
Zelenskyy had on Tuesday expressed commitment to fixing diplomatic relations with U.S. President, Donald Trump, following their heated exchange at the White House oval office last week.
In a statement released on his X account, Zelenskyy said Ukraine is willing to work with Trump to ensure lasting peace in the region.
“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.
“We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and truce in the sky — ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure — and truce in the sea immediately, if Russia will do the same.
“Then we want to move very fast through all next stages and to work with the US to agree a strong final deal,” he said.
Zelenskyy’s letter came just a day after Trump halted military assistance to Ukraine, a move widely seen as a shift in U.S. policy toward the war.
However, Zelenskyy’s latest move is expected to fix relations with the US and push Ukraine and Russia closer to ending the war.
