Ukraine Peace Talks May Start Early 2025, Poland PM Says
Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Franciszek Tusk, on Tuesday, hinted at the possibility of starting peace talks on the war in Ukraine within the first quarter of 2025.
Tusk highlighted Poland’s intent to play a key role in shaping the negotiations, particularly as it assumes the European Union (EU) presidency on January 1, 2025.
“I will have a series of talks concerning primarily the situation beyond our eastern border,” he told a government meeting.
“As you can imagine, our delegation will be co-responsible for, among other things, what the political calendar will look like, perhaps what the situation will be like during the negotiations, which may, although there is still a question mark, start in the winter of this year,” he said.
Poland, a steadfast supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion, has actively engaged with international allies and plans a series of high-level discussions to ensure negotiations begin as soon as possible.
Tusk revealed that French President Emmanuel Macron is set to visit Warsaw on Thursday to brief him on his recent talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Paris.
He also confirmed ongoing consultations with Scandinavian and Baltic allies and announced that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would visit Warsaw shortly after Poland took over the EU presidency.
“I really want Poland to be the country that will not only be present, but will set the tone for these decisions that are to bring us security and secure Polish interests,” Tusk added.
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy on Monday reiterated his preference for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
However, he expressed doubts about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to pursue peace, sharing his concern with Trump and Macron during their meeting in Paris.
Russia, on its part, restated on Tuesday that the war would continue until its objectives are achieved, whether through military action or negotiations.
