U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 125 per cent tariff on all Chinese imports into the U.S. as the trade war between both countries continues to escalate.
The move comes after China retaliated with an 84 per cent tariff on American goods in response to an earlier 104 per cent tariff imposed by the U.S., reports CNN.
Trump made the announcement Wednesday evening via a post on his Truth Social platform, declaring an immediate hike in Chinese tariffs.
Simultaneously, he authorised a 90-day pause on tariffs for all other countries and reduced the reciprocal tariff rate to 10 per cent to allow room for negotiations.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the world’s markets, I am hereby raising the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump wrote.
“At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realise that the days of ripping off the USA and other countries are no longer sustainable or acceptable,” he added.
The president said the decision to pause tariffs on other nations followed diplomatic outreach from over 75 countries.
The countries, he said, had contacted the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR to begin trade talks.
“I have authorised a 90-day PAUSE and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately,” Trump added.
Speaking at a press conference, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “When you punch at the United States of America, President Trump is going to punch back harder.”
She confirmed that the Trump administration had received numerous negotiation requests from global partners since the announcement.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters that each country would be offered a tailored trade deal.
“We’re open to negotiations with every country willing to talk, but China’s insistence on escalation has led to this 125% tariff,” he said.
Bessent added that Trump’s personal involvement in the process is key to the 90-day pause, adding that it gives the administration time to draft individual agreements.
