A military helicopter crash on Wednesday has killed two Ghanaian ministers.

The Ghanaian Defence Minister, Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were onboard the ill-fated military helicopter that crashed in the Ashanti region, Reuters reports.

The incident was confirmed by President John Mahama’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah.

Debrah disclosed that the crash also claimed the lives of three other government officials and three Air Force personnel.

Addressing a press conference, Debrah described the incident as a “national tragedy”.

“The President and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” Debrah was quoted by Reuters.

Earlier, Ghana’s Armed Forces said radar contact had been lost with the Z9 Air Force helicopter.

The helicopter was carrying a total of eight people — three crew members and five passengers.
