Two people were confirmed dead and nine others injured in a road crash that occurred Monday night along the Owode-Ijako axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The tragic incident, which happened near the Tipper Garage inbound Abeokuta, involved three vehicles, a DAF truck, a Mazda bus, and a tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP.

This was disclosed in a traffic update released on Tuesday by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).

According to the report, the accident was caused when the DAF truck, parked at a sloping entrance to a warehouse in the area, started to roll backward after the driver allegedly left the engine running and engaged the handbrake.

An eyewitness account included in the TRACE report stated that the truck driver had exited the vehicle to submit a waybill to security personnel at the warehouse. Moments later, the truck reportedly disengaged from the handbrake and rolled into the expressway, ramming into the Mazda bus and the tricycle.

TRACE officials confirmed that a total of 14 people, 11 males and three females, were involved in the crash.

Initially, one adult male was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine others, seven males and two females, were rushed to the Ifo General Hospital for emergency medical attention. A second male victim was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

The DAF truck with the registration number JJJ-144XD, the Mazda bus EPE-394XP, and the tricycle DGB-599VC.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and advised drivers, particularly those handling heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to safety protocols, especially when parking on inclined surfaces.

TRACE officials noted that efforts are ongoing to contact the families of the deceased, while the condition of the injured victims remains under close monitoring.
